aang.jpg
Avatar Aang

Avatar Aang

Aang, a 12 year old Air Nomad, never wanted to be the Avatar. He just wanted to be a kid who could have a lot of fun. But when you find out that you're the legendary Avatar, nothing stays the same. Though technically he was suppose to have been told of his fate when he turned 16, the five monks of the Southern Air Temple told him early because they feared war was on the horizon. Aang reluctantly accepted, for a while anyway.

sokka1.jpg
SOKKA

Sokka

A warrior-to-be, 15 year old Sokka is a very physical type of person. He prefers weapons to Bending, and even if he could waterbend he probably wouldn't change his mind on it being weird. Not much of a believer, he's quick to judge others and can often be a little cynical until proven wrong (like Appa's ability to fly). He trusts his instincts first, but when he makes a mistake he isn't afraid to admit it. He's also been known to be a bit sexist, especially when it comes to gender roles. Although he's learned better, with help from Suki. He's very protective of his younger sister Katara, and treasures the boomerang given to him by their father.

momo.jpg
Momo

 Momo

Momo is a winged-lemur, a once plentiful (and mischievous) specie that lived with the Air Nomads and was often kept as pets. However since the war, it's believed that most if not all of the Air Nomads and their animals (winged-lemur, flying bison, etc) have died out.

gy.jpg
Monk Gyatso

Monk Gyatso

A master Airbender that was one of five monks that resided at the Southern Air Temple over 100 years ago, Monk Gyatso was Aang's guardian. He helped Aang with his airbending training, played games with him, and overall just made his time at the temple much better. Even though Aang was training to be the Avatar, he believed that Aang should grow up as a normal boy, despite the other monks' decisions. Monk Gyatso was highly respected, was a great baker, and was kind and very wise. He was like a father to Aang, and they got along together very well.

pakku.jpg
Pakku

Master Pakku

Pakku is a master Waterbender and uses a lot of dry sarcasm. Born and raised in the Northern Water Tribe, Pakku is very set in his culture's traditions. He also takes his waterbending classes that he teaches very seriously; the classes start at sunrise, and not even the Avatar receives special treatment or gets a break. Pakku also has a rather sexist attitude towards women and where they 'belong'.

azula.jpg
Azula

Princess Azula

Princess Azula is Zuko's younger sister and is the favored child of Fire Lord Ozai. She is named after her grandfather Azulon, and was considered to be born lucky. She is a Firebending prodigy with powers on par with her father, and has the ability to create and guide powerful lightning attacks. She attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, and has been childhood friends with Ty Lee and Mai. She has always been loyal to Ozai, and thinks very little of her uncle Iroh. Growing up, she was often reprimanded by her mother Ursa for the mean and/or disrespectful things that she said.

yue.jpg
Yue

Yue

Princess Yue is the daughter of Chief Arnook of the Northern Water Tribe. She's usually seen sailing through the city in a boat with a servant/helper who takes care of the rowing (via waterbending). She recently turned 16, making her "marrying age" according to her father/Tribe traditions, which helps explain why she is already engaged. However she doesn't seem very happy about it, and even breaks into tears when Katara talks about her Gran-Gran's arranged marriage.

haru.jpg
Haru

Haru

This is Haru, a teenage boy who has probably lived in this village his whole life. He's an intermediate earthbender, and learned everything he knows from his father who is also an experienced earthbender. Haru despises the Fire Nation for controlling his village and taking away his father, but he won't act on those feelings because he knows what the consequence would be if he did. He's rebellious enough to want to do something, but not enough to actually do it on his own. And he would be on his own; all the other villagers have given up on fighting back. He lives with his mother in a farmhouse higher up on the countryside, but they also have a shop inside the marketplace. Despite the Fire Nation's rule, Haru secretly practices his earthbending in a gorge far outside the village. Because Katara's inspiring words and courage left quite the impression on him, he's grown rather fond of her. ...He also has beautiful grass-green eyes.

harumother.jpg
Haru's Mother

Haru's Mother

This is Haru's mother. She takes care of their shop in the marketplace along with a lot of other chores and raising Haru since Tyro was taken away. She worries a lot about her husband and son, and continuously warns Haru to stop earthbending so he won't get taken away like Tyro was. It is unknown if she also has earthbending skills.

avatarkyoshi.jpg
Avatar Kyoshi

Avatar Kyoshi

Kyoshi  of the Earth Kingdom was the Avatar sometime before Roku, although the exact time is still debatable. She was born on an island in the southern hemisphere (that later was renamed after her) 400 years ago. She used two fans as weapons and wore an intricate warrior's gown and headset, creating a tradition that is still followed by the female warriors of Kyoshi Island today. She has only appeared in the show twice, as a statue and wall mosaic in episode 3, and as another statue in episode 4.

mai.jpg
Mai

Mai

Mai (pronounced "May") is a teenage girl who lived in the Fire Nation until her father was appointed by Fire Lord Ozai to be Governor of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. She had been living in Omashu with her family ever since, until Princess Azula showed up. Azula was forming a small elite team to hunt down Zuko and Iroh, and she wanted Mai to be a part of it. Mai instantly agreed, partially because she hated being in Omashu.

meng.jpg
Meng

Meng

Meng lives in a village below Mt. Mahaku in the northern region of the Earth Kingdom, and is the young assistant for Aunt Wu. Part of her job includes greeting Aunt Wu's guests and bringing them snacks. Meng is a bit younger (and shorter) than Aang, and also had a major crush on him from the moment they first met. Part of this crush may have been influenced by Aunt Wu, who prophesied that Meng was destined to marry a man with big ears. The fact that "meng" and "aang" sound similar also seemed important. Throughout the day Meng stalked Aang and dropped giant hints of her crush on him, but he stayed oblivious. Or worse, used her ideas to try impress Katara.

jeong.jpg
Jeong

Jeong

Jeong is a strong, enlightened man who has seen more than his share of the cruel reality of war. Once an honored Admiral of the Fire Nation military, he left and became known as The Deserter. Because he was the first person to abandon his military and survive, he's considered a legend. He lives in the Earth Kingdom wilderness to avoid Fire Nation soldiers and bounty hunters, and travels with a small group of followers including Chey, the second man to survive leaving the Fire Nation army (and quite the JJ fanboy as well.)

ursa.jpg
Ursa

Ursa

Ursa is the wife of Fire Lord Ozai, and the mother of Zuko and Azula. She is respectful and well mannered, and a good mother. She's kind and loving, but will be stern when she needs to be. She's very supportive of Zuko, and realizes that something is wrong with Azula.

yuyan2.jpg
YuuYan Archers

YuuYan Archers

The YuuYan Archers are recognizable by the red war paint on their faces -- a thick bar that widens like an ax around their eyes, and then two small diamonds, one above and below the bridge of their nose. In addition to their matching uniforms, they also wear headbands with a red triangle on it. The same marking also appears on the back of their box-like quiver. On both hands their thumb, index and middle fingers are covered with a special glove that protects their fingers from the friction of shooting their bow.

jlongshot.jpg
Longshot

Longshot

This is Longshot, nicknamed so because of his excellent skill and aim with the bow and arrow. Longshot's town was burned down sometime before he joined up with Jet, so it's my theory that whatever happened then is one of the reasons why he is so silent. He never speaks during the episode except to cheer or boo at Jet's speech along with the other kids. He wears a bluish outfit with a red mini-cape, a straw hat, and has intense black eyes.

jpipsqueak.jpg
Pipsqueak

Pipsqueak

This is Pipsqueak, the largest member of the group. Seriously, he's easily over 6-feet tall and is built thick. And I really have no idea how old he is. ^^; Besides the ironic name (maybe he was really tiny when he first joined?), he wears interesting armor and uses a big log as his weapon along with brute strength. Pipsqueak is defensive about his name, trusts Jet as the leader, and likes to eat lichi nuts. He can also be silly sometimes

jsneers.jpg
Sneers

Sneers

This is Sneers, the least mentioned member in the group. Really. After being introduced to Aang & co, he fades into the background and is never spoken to again. But here's what I do know. He wears his hair in a topknot! And he doesn't fight with weapons, but with his own physical strength. Although he usually isn't seen accompanying Jet on important missions, he is seen in the background doing grunt work like moving supplies and stuff. Wheee.

teodad.jpg
Mechanist

Mechanist

This man is known as the Mechanist, and is a brilliant and offbeat inventor. He seems like a nice person, and certainly cares about his son, Teo. Although he can get so carried away with his inventions and scientific progress that he becomes oblivious to the destruction it has caused to his surroundings. (Like the historical artifacts of the Northern Air Temple). His eyebrows were burned off during a run-in with a gas leak in the temple's cellar while holding a torch, and although he jokes that he made a finger safe knife sharpener that only took three tries to perfect, I kinda doubt that's how he lost his three left fingers. I mean, the guy is a scientist, how could he make the same dumb mistake three times in a row? It doesn't seem likely

pirate-captain.jpg
Pirate Captain

Pirate Captain

This is the Pirate Captain; leader of this band of... high-risk traders. Judging by his choice of clothing, it seems as if he is from the Fire Nation. He has gray hair, a really big hat, and a reptilian parrot. No, the parrot doesn't talk, but it does make a really loud screeching squawk. Captain's choice weapon is a sword, which he uses quite proficiently. He also has his share of ups and downs when it comes to common sense.   (Pro: Knows not to trade a 200-gold piece Waterbending Scroll for 2 copper pieces. Con: When the Waterbending Scroll is stolen, he wants to check out the forests. I mean, really now.)

katara.jpg
KATARA

Katara

Fourteen years old and the only Waterbender in the whole South Pole; Katara had to grow up rather quickly which made her very mature for her age. Her mother was killed in a Fire Nation attack when she was 8, and her father left to fight in the war when she was 12. Raised in a small village in the South Pole with her older brother Sokka, after their father left they were mostly taken care of by their grandmother, Gran Gran. While Sokka was off "playing solider", Katara was cooking, cleaning, and doing the laundry. Things haven't been easy, but she never lost hope that it would get better -- that the Avatar would return. It must be fate that she and her brother were the ones to discover Aang frozen in an iceberg during one of their fishing trips gone awry

princezuko.jpg
Zuko

Prince Zuko

Only 16 years old and already he's been banished from his home in the Fire Nation. For two years he has been sailing around the world with his Uncle Iroh and a crew of firebenders in hopes to find and capture the Avatar. Doing so would restore his honor in his father's eyes and give him back his birthright as heir to the Fire Nation throne. Because of this, Prince Zuko is very determined to capture Aang. He is learning firebending from his Uncle Iroh, and is a worthy opponent.

appa.jpg
Appa

Appa

Appa is Aang's flying bison and his spirit animal guide. It's also quite possible that Appa is the last living creature of his specie. He was with Aang when they fell into the ocean during a terrible storm 100 years ago, and Aang formed the iceberg that saved them both from drowning.

hakoda.jpg
Hakoda

Hakoda

Hakoda is Sokka and Katara's father, and the son of Gran Gran. It is assumed that he grew up in the Southern Water Tribe, along with his friend Bato. They were a mischievous pair growing up, and stories of their pranks are still told in the tribe like the Great Blubber Fiasco, and that time when they put a squid on Hakoda's head and convinced Gran Gran he was a Water Spirit. (Bato provided the spooky voice). When Hakoda was 15, he earned the Mark of the Wise in the ice dodging rite of passage

iroh.jpg
Iroh

Uncle Iroh

Nicknamed the Dragon of the West, Iroh is a retired general and considered a great hero to the Fire Nation. He is the brother of Fire Lord Ozai, making him Prince Zuko's uncle. While he was still active in the war, he and his army laid siege to the great Earth Kingdom city Ba Sing Se. For 600 days they battled, but when his beloved son Lu Ten died in battle, he was devastated and abandoned the siege.

azulon.jpg
Azulon

Fire Lord Azulon

Fire Lord Azulon was the son of Fire Lord Sozin, who had originally started the war. Azulon was married to a woman named Ila, was father to Iroh and Ozai, and was grandfather to Lu Ten, Zuko, and Azula. He ruled over the Fire Nation for 23 years, and is remembered as a "fearless leader in the battle of Gar Sai" and a "matchless conqueror of the Hu Sin provinces."

bumi.jpg
Bumi

Bumi

One hundred years ago, young Bumi was friends with Aang and they use to play together in Bumi's hometown, Omashu. The two troublemakers often went down the delivery chutes, which were basically like giant super slides. They had a lot of fun, and Aang often called Bumi a Mad Genius because of his interesting way of viewing things. It was Bumi's motto to "open your brain to the possibilites" which basically meant not to accept just the obvious.

tyro.jpg
Tyro

Tyro

This is Haru's father, Tyro. Tyro is an experienced earthbender and led the rebellion against the Fire Nation when they first attacked the village. Despite them being outnumbered 10 to 1, Tyro fought with much courage. But it wasn't enough, and he along with many other earthbenders were taken away never to be heard from again. Even on the rig his fellow earthbenders looked up to him and he took care of them like a good leader would. Hmm, maybe he is this village's leader? Although he gave up on trying to escape from the rig a long time ago, he focused on making sure his people survived, and holding out for the day the war ended and they could be let free.

kana.jpg
Kana

Kana

Kana, also known as "Gran Gran", is Katara and Sokka's caring grandmother on their father's side. She is the eldest in the Southern Water Tribe, but is not a waterbender. Although she had her doubts about Aang at first, when it was revealed that he was indeed the Avatar, she had regained hope; something she probably hasn't had for a long time. She cares deeply for her two grandchildren, and her son Hakoda, who left with the other men to help the Earth Kingdom in the war.

luten.jpg
Lu Ten

Lu Ten

Lu Ten was the beloved and only son of Iroh, cousin to Zuko and Azula, and grandson to Fire Lord Azulon. Little is known about him right now, but he seems like he was a happy boy and close with his father. He was also in line for the Royal throne since Iroh was to be the next Fire Lord.

ozai.jpg
Fire Lord Ozai

Fire Lord Ozai

The second son of Fire Lord Azulon , Ozai is the current Fire Lord. He has two children, Zuko and Azula, is the brother of Iroh, and husband to Ursa. Ozai is a master Firebender, a ruthless man, and hungers for more power. He strongly favors Azula over Zuko, who greatly resembles him and his ideals, along with being a firebending prodigy.

stupidoldman.jpg
Stupid Old Man

Stupid Old Man

This is the stupid old man who sold Haru out. Despite Haru saving his life by using earthbending to push back the collapsed mine that was about to crush him, he still sold him out to the firebenders. UGH! Stupid old man.

tylee.jpg
Ty Lee

Ty Lee

Ty Lee, the daughter of a nobleman, is a childhood friend of Princess Azula and Mai. The three of them attended the Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girls together, however sometime later Ty Lee ran off to join the circus. She's been skilled in acrobatics from a young age, and really felt like the circus was her calling.

toph.jpg
Toph

Toph

Toph is a bratty and in-your-face 12-year old, and a master Earthbender. She was born blind, but can "see" with her feet by feeling the vibrations on the ground. She is the only daughter of the Bei Fong family, who are extremely wealthy. However, her parents believed her to be fragile, tiny, and helpless, so they hid her from the world. Most of the people in town did not even know she existed, except for Master Yu the local Earthbending teacher. Toph had private lessons for years where she was only taught basic Earthbending forms and breathing exercises. But Toph was stronger than that and trained on her own.

roku.jpg
Avatar Roku

Avatar Roku

Roku of the Fire Nation was the Avatar before Aang, and reigned for a century. He kept the world in peace until his death, and the Fire Nation's ambition for world domination took flight. Roku's animal guide was a large red dragon with the ability to communicate telepathically by placing one of its whiskers on a person's forehead. There use to be a golden statue of Roku on the top floor of a temple on a cresent-moon shaped island in the Fire Nation, but that temple was destroyed in episode 8, by Roku himself.

zhao2.jpg
Admiral Zhao

Admiral Zhao

A powerful military man of the Fire Nation, he has his own harbor with hundreds of firebender warships at his command. During the two years that Prince Zuko was at sea, Zhao was promoted from Captain to Commander. And then in episode 13, which takes place a few months after Zuko found out about Zhao's promotion, he was promoted again to Admiral.

jet.jpg
Jet

Jet

This is Jet, the leader. He seems to be the oldest and most mature of the group. He understands the meaning of sacrifice for the bigger picture, but his morals are a bit off-balance. He fiercely hates the Fire Nation and will do what ever it takes to bring them down, no matter how many innocents die along way.

jsmellerbee.jpg
Smellerbee

Smellerbee

This is Smellerbee, one of the younger members in this group. He uses a snaked dagger as his weapon of choice, as well as any blades left behind from defeated Fire Nation soldiers. Though his past isn't mentioned, he follows the same train of thought as Jet when it comes to the Fire Nation. Because of this, Smellerbee and Pipsqueak usually go on missions together because Jet knows they won't turn against him & his plan.

jduke.jpg
The Duke

The Duke

This is The Duke, who is probably the youngest of the group. Jet said they found him sneaking around the food in their camp one day, and he's been with them ever since. They don't think he ever had a home. The Duke doesn't use any weapons when they attack Fire Nation soldiers, although he does drop down from the trees and rides the soldiers like a hog-monkey. ^^; The Duke doesn't talk too much and seems pretty loyal to Jet, but he has questioned some plans when it includes hurting innocent villagers.

suki.jpg
Suki

Suki

Teenage leader of the Kyoshi Island warriors, Suki is strong, intelligent, and takes her island's traditions very seriously. She's courageous in battle and is quite skilled in Kyoshi's style of martial arts, which involves using fans as a weapon. While confidant in herself, she doesn't have an inflated ego.

teo.jpg
Teo

Teo

This is Teo, the Mechanist's son. He was just an infant when the flood that took his mother's life happened, but during the event Teo was badly injured. His dad though created possibly one of the first wheelchairs in the world, just for him. Shaped kind of like a wheelbarrow, there's a lever for the brake and the chair connects to a glider. Assuming that it was first made when Teo was a small child or toddler, it was probably re-made many times over the years to match Teo's growing size.
